The Planning Group of the first Aberdeen Chess in the Schools and Communities International Conference (CISCCON; August 30 to September 1, 2007) calls for research, policy and practice papers that address the aims of this conference in the context of the current major themes. Deadline for submission of abstracts is 22nd December 2006. Full paper presentations to be submitted by Friday 30th March 2007. The international conference is being organised by Aberdeen City Council with the University of Aberdeen (School of Education) and Scottish Junior Chess. CISCCON web site address:

It has been a very successful year for Armenian chess: Levon Aronian won the World Cup, the Armenian team won the Olympiad in Torino, the Armenian Women's team won the European Club Cup and Zaven Andriasian of Armenia won the World Juniors. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and welcomed the efforts of Armenian authorities aimed at development of chess.

Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany) shows the close connection between chess and politics; some 400 objects are on display including the Reykjavik World Championship tournament table, the chessboard of Stroebeck from 1651, as well as historical chess sets, political cartoons and illustrations. The exhibition focuses on the 20th century. The game of chess is, however, not simply an object for the symbolic projection of political and social processes; since the beginning of the 7th century it has actually been used to teach military and strategic thinking. World Senior Chess Champion GM Victor Korchnoi (Switzerland) and the cabaret-comedian Matthias Deutschmann (the German voice of "Fritz") have opened the exhibition on 31 October 2006 in Bonn.

The
6th European Individual Senior Championship has been the main event of the Chess Summer Festival (August 5-13, 2006) in Davos (Switzerland), one of the most popular tourist places in Europe. With 121 players there were less participants than 2005 in Bad Homburg (Germany), but this championship took place for the first time in Switzerland and with 10 GM, among them Viktor Korchnoi (Elo 2603) playing the first time in an individual senior championship, it was even stronger than the event in 2005.
