Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008), the 11
th World Chess Champion (1972-1975) has passed away in Iceland. He was
buried on January 21 at a churchyard near Selfoss (southern Iceland).

The dates of the 1
st World Mind Games in Beijing/China (3 to 18 October 2008) clash with the
European Club Cup in Kalithea from 12 to 18 October. All European chess federations which contacted the ECU office by 18 January 2008 said that they would prefer keeping the current dates of the European Club Cup.

On December 28, 2008, the President of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian rewarded Gaguik Oganessian, General Secretary of the Armenian Chess Federation, with a governmental high award after Movses Khorenatsi.
