250,000 Free Chess Sets

Fergus Christie, Sales Director of Holloid Plastics Ltd., has offered manufacturing some 250,000 chess sets completely free of charge which could be distributed to schools throughout England. For Peter J B Wilson, ECF Director of Marketing, this "is the most exciting chess project I have ever had the pleasure of being connected with and potentially could change the face of English chess for ever".

The 10th European Team Chess Championship starts in Dresden (Germany) on Monday, 2008-02-11, with the opening ceremony and round 1. 68 teams are registrated from AUT, CZE, DEN, ENG, ESP, FIN, GER, ISR, ITA, LUX, NED, NOR, POL, RUS, SCO, SUI, SWE and TUR.

Robert James ("Bobby") Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008), the 11th World Chess Champion (1972-1975) has passed away in Iceland. He was buried on January 21 at a churchyard near Selfoss (southern Iceland).

European Club Cup 2008

The dates of the 1st World Mind Games in Beijing/China (3 to 18 October 2008) clash with the European Club Cup in Kalithea from 12 to 18 October. All European chess federations which contacted the ECU office by 18 January 2008 said that they would prefer keeping the current dates of the European Club Cup.

On December 28, 2008, the President of the Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian rewarded Gaguik Oganessian, General Secretary of the Armenian Chess Federation, with a governmental high award after Movses Khorenatsi.
