Nicola Palladino (1932-2008)

Nicola Palladino, the former President of the Italian Chess Federation "Federazione Scacchistica Italiana", died in Milan. He has devoted his life to chess. He organized the super tournament in Milan 1975 (Lajos Portisch/HUN ahead of Anatoly Karpov/URS, Tigran Petrosyan/URS and Ljubomir Ljubojevic/YUG) and the world chess championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi in Merano in 1981. Within the World Chess Federation FIDE he served as Chairman of the Chess in Schools Committee for many years and chaired the Verification Commission. In 1995 he was made an Honorary Member of FIDE.

During his second visit to Cuba in April 2008, the 12th World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov (Russia) was honoured as "Man of the Future" by Havana's Computer Science University.

GM Sergei Tiviakov (NED) and GM Kateryna Lahno (UKR) are the winners of the 9th European Individual Chess Championships (men/women) in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) with 8.5/11 each. The final tie-break matches for silver and bronze medals (4th round men / 3rd round women) start today (May 3) at 16.40 local time.

Twentyfiveyear old Dusan Popović, chess olympic player and state team member, today plays the most important game in his life, GAME FOR HIS LIFE, and only with your help the result will be in his advantage!

The departure of this chess player, who is one of the top 10 chess players in Serbia, to the European Championship has been unexpectedly cancelled due to the cruel game of destiny when both his kidneys stopped working in the middle of March.

BALC Meeting

On April 23, 2008 Novotel Plovdiv (Bulgaria) hosted a meeting of the Balkan Chess Federation (BALC). BALC was established on August 20, 2006 in Athens, by the chess federations of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and Turkey as founding members. ECU President Boris Kutin and ECU Board Member Vladimir Sakotic attended the BALC meeting.
