Mr Aleksandr Lukyanchenko, Mayor of Donetsk (Ukraine), congratulated GM
Kateryna Lahno for winning the European Individual Chess Championship 2008 in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) in the women's section. According to a resolution of the City Council, Kateryna Lahno was awarded a certificate and a medal "For Services to the City".

During the European Chess Championship 2008 in Plovdiv, Montenegro
made an impressive presentation of Budva as the venue of the
European Individual Chess Championship 2009 for men (March 14-28, 2009). The presentation was attended by ECU President Boris Kutin, ECU vice-president Garry Walsh, former women's World Champion Grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili, a host of chess activists, arbiters, organizers,
and chess lovers.

Nicola Palladino, the former President of the Italian Chess Federation "Federazione Scacchistica Italiana", died in Milan. He has devoted his life to chess. He organized the super tournament in Milan 1975 (Lajos Portisch/HUN ahead of Anatoly Karpov/URS, Tigran Petrosyan/URS and Ljubomir Ljubojevic/YUG) and the world chess championship match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi in Merano in 1981. Within the World Chess Federation FIDE he served as Chairman of the Chess in Schools Committee for many years and chaired the Verification Commission. In 1995 he was made an Honorary Member of FIDE.
