The ECU tournament calendar shows a Balkan Individual Championship, but no organisers for this event in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Perhaps there will be a change. According to reports from
England and from
Greece a "Balkan Chess Federation" was founded recently in Athens (Aug 21, 2006). FIDE Executive Director David Jarrett (England) was present.

The ECU tournament calendar shows 3 tournaments in September 2006. The
2nd EU Championship (September 6-15, 2006) in Liverpool (England) was won by the former world title challenger GM Nigel Short (ENG) with 7.5/10. Seven players shared the lead on 6.5/9, but Short was the only player to win an impressive game in the last round - "to the delight of the sponsors, who never enjoy messy finishes" (Short, in:

Tie-break matches - A tie-break match consisting of two games (15 minutes + 10 seconds per move) was played today by Lahno K. (Ukraine) and Kosintseva N. (Russia) in order to find out the winners of the 1st and 2nd places. Kosintseva played uninspired the first game, and she also lost the second one. Thus, the first place and the title of European Champion 2005 were won by Lahno K.

I hereby confirm that the European Chess Union has granted the European Rapid Championship 2006 to Warsaw Foundation for Chess Development.
The Foundation has the final responsibility for all financial connection with ECU and is in a position to prepare an official invitation to all ECU Chess Federations. All payments, including entry fee may be collected on WFChD’s bank account.
ECU has accepted Mr Tomasz Delega as a Chief Arbiter of the European Rapid Chess Championship 2006.
The general information, including rules, entree fees and prizes shall be approved by ECU.

Netherlands won the ECTC after beating Poland in the last round. Poland´s women´s team played 2-2 against Armenia, which was enough for victory in the women´s tournament. All results are to be found on the Official Homepage...

Chess makes kids smarter, make no doubt about it! The brightest chess minds of Europe have gathered to challenge each others IQ’s, to challenge the preparations of many coaches and trainers. As of the moment I write this, The European Youth Championships U10-U18 in both competitions have moved into the 2nd half, with round five finished.

On September 13 and 14 (yesterday and today) was held in Moscow the GOLDEN BLITZ Cup.
In the final of the men, Ponomarev (who won against Tkachev in the 1/2 finals and Grishuk in the 1/4 finals) won against Bareev (who won against Tregubov in the 1/2 finals and Short in the 1/4 finals). In the semi-finals were Tkachev (who won against Motylev in the 1/4 finals) and Tregubov (who won against Pelletier in the 1/4 finals). In the final of the women, Alexandra Kosteniuk beat Almira Skripchenko 2-0. In the semi-finals Kosteniuk beat Zhu Chen 2-0 and Skripchenko beat Irina Krush.
It was a super show and on TV live (NTV+) and soon we hope to other countries too.
