Dear Friends,
Circular Letter No. 13/2006
On 8 and 9 September 2006 the Chess Federation of Montenegro hosted a ECU Board meeting on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the European Youth Championship in Herceg Novi. We would like to thank for the nice hospitality.
The ECU Board appointed the following officers for a period of 4 years:
Youth Director: Dr Agnieszka Fornal-Urban (Poland)
Senior Director: Per Ofstad (Norway)
Press Officer: Gerald Schendel (Germany)
Marketing Director: Branimir Jukic (Croatia)
Grand Prix Director: Sava Kizova (Serbia)
The Board will co-operate with these officers in order to set some new highlights for the future work.
The European Team Championship (Men and Women) 2007 has to be postponed for one week due to the announced dates of the World Championship. The new period is 27 October to 7 November 2007 in Heraklio/Greece. As a consequence, the 2007 General Assembly has to be postponed to 3 November.
Next year’s European Individual Championship will be held in Dresden/Germany from 2 to 15 April. It has been decided that 33 players of the men’s championship and 16 from the women’s championship will qualify for the FIDE World Cup respectively Women’s World Championship. In addition, the Board granted the qualification right to this year’s European champions under 18 (girls and boys).
We received three excellent bids for the European Youth Championships 2008. Therefore, it was not an easy task for the Board to decide about the venue of this championship. Finally it has been awarded to Herceg Novi.
Hockenheim/Germany has been confirmed as venue of the European Individual Senior Championship 2007. It will be held from 2 to 10 June.
The 10th European Senior Team Championship has been granted to Dresden/Germany from 16 to 24 February 2008. By this decision the championship will be organized for the 10th time in a row in the capital of Saxony and the venue of the next Chess Olympiad.
The European Individual and Team Championship for Cadets and Juniors (Rapid and Blitz) will be hosted in Herceg Novi from 27 September to 1 October 2008.
The European Amateur Championship 2007 is going to be organized once more in Pardubice/Czech Republic. It will be held in the course of the famous summer festival from 21 to 28 July.
Aosta Italy will hold the European Union Championship 2007. The EU Youth Championship is probably once more organized in Mureck/Austria.
The decisions about the venues of the European Club Cup, the European Individual Championships and the European Youth Team Championships 2008 are postponed in order to check some necessary information concerning the bids. The Board will make the final decisions at the next meeting.
As there seems to be a need for promoting chess for younger age groups, two important steps have been taken. The Board granted a European under 8 championship for a period of three years to the Georgian Chess Federation and accepted an under 10 age group in the European School Team Championship.
In order to intensify the relations between the European Union, ECU and the national chess federations a seminar will be held in Brussels in May 2007. The main topics will be:
- Lobbying in Brussels: the work of the EU office of the German Sport
- Survey of EU programmes available for sport activities
- The work of the EU Sport Unit
- Current political EU issues regarding sport
- Meeting with members of EU Parliament and Commissioner Jan Figl
Further details will be published by the end of this year.
The ECU Board has received an invitation from the Chess Federation of Azerbaijan to hold the next meeting in Baku from 11 to 14 January 2007.
Best regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
