To all

European federations

Berlin, Januar 8, 1999

Dear friends,

at the beginning of the New Year, we would like to inform you about some new topics and would like to ask you for your cooperation.

  • 1. As you know, the World Championship is supposed to be held in Las Vegas from June 19 to July 17, 1999. Therefore we had to postpone the European Team Championship to the end of this year. Our proposal is, to organize this event either between October 28 and November 8 or between November 25 and December 8, 1999. Within these periods, the organizer may propose the exact dates (9 or 10 days).
Which proposal would be more convenient for your federation?
  • 2. The ECU-Board will meet from February 12 until 14, 1999 in Baden-Baden/Germany.
During the meeting the final decision about the venue and the dates of the European Championship will be taken.
  • 3. The regulations of the European Junior and Girls Championship have been amended in Elista. The European federations are requested to submit bids for the 1999 event as well as for the next years.
  • 4. The European Chess Union should collect data of its member federations in order to coordinate activities and arguments to find partners and sponsors. These activities will be checked with FIDE secretariat to guarantee similar facts. This procedure should make possible an efficient office in Berlin. By the way , one of the secretaries of the German Chess Federation, Mrs. Martina Leonhard, will be responsable for the ECU-topics.
Don’t hesitate to contact her, to get any information.
  • 5. Our president, Boris Kutin negotiates with some interested parties (i.e. railway and air companies) about various kinds of cooperations. He asks you to send a sample of each chess magazine which is published in your country to him.

Furthermore we would like to ask you to give us the following information until

February 5, 1999:

  • How many members does your federation have?
  • Could you please send us a calendar of your most important tournaments in order to prepare an European Calendar (if possible including the number of participating players)!
  • Are you a member of your National Olympic Committee (full membership, extraordinary membership)?

Thank you very much for your kind cooperation.

Best regards

Horst Metzing

Secretary General
