To all
European Chess Federations
and European Zonal Presidents
Berlin 23th September 1999
Dear friends,
On 10th and 11th September 1999 the ECU Board met in Leptokaria/Greece. The Greek Chess Federation hosted this meeting on the occasion of the European Youth Championship in Litohoro. It was a fruitfull meeting and the Board members had the opportunity to get an own impression about a championship which generally, was organized on a real high level.
The Government of Berlin has offered new rooms for the ECU under good financial conditions. The details are not yet finalized. The removal would be likely organized in the end of this year. Then, the ECU will have its own meeting room. The office will be used by the ECU and the German Chess Federation.
The ECU homepage will be ready in a few weeks, at least before the meeting in Doha.
There are some ideas to strenghten the work of the ECU. Zonal President Goran Antunac has proposed to work at a closer cooperation between the ECU Board and the European (FIDE) Zonal Presidents. An informal meeting should be convened either in Batumi or in Doha.
In order to cover some special tasks, the ECU Board will appoint officers instead of committees. Concerning chess in schools, it is agreed to cooperate with the International School Chess Union (ISCU).
The Board took notice of the paid and unpaid fees of the European Club Cup. Teams who do not pay until 31st December 1999 (deadline) will be not admitted for future European Club Cups or other European events unless they pay the debts plus 10 %.
The Board confirmed that the entry fees for the European Club Cups in the future will be changed to 300 Euros (men) and 150 Euros (women). A motion will be prepared for the General Assembly in Batumi.
The European Team Championship will be held 27th November until 8th December 1999 in Batumi/Georgia. The official invitations were posted by the Georgian Chess Fede-
ration. Deadline for the registration will be 27th September 1999. The Board is convinced that this event will be well organized and held under real conditions.
The Board decides to hold the 1st Individual European Chess Championship in the year 2000. Bids should reach the ECU Secretariat by the end of October 1999.
The proposal of Willy Iclicki to replace the Zonal Tournaments every odd year by Continental Championships should be discussed in Batumi. Willy Iclicki has been asked to bring forward this proposal as a motion.
The 1st European Women’s Championship should be held in Baden-Baden from 3rd to 17th February 2000. It might be necessary to call off this championship because of problems with sponsorships.
The European Junior Championship 1999 (U20) will take place from 4th to 19th October 1999 in Niforeika/Patras. Invitations have already been posted.
Bids for the upcoming European Junior and Youth events should reach the ECU secretariat by the end of September 1999. In the future, meals for the participants have to be offered in the same hotel where the players are accommodated.
Tournament Director Dirk de Ridder has announced the European Club Cup 1999. The preliminary rounds will take place between 17th September and 10th October 1999. The final will be organized by Bosna Sarajevo, from 29th until 31st October in Bugoino.
Concerning the regulations of the European Club Cup, the participation of foreign players in the teams should be discussed during the General Assembly in Batumi in order to restrict their number.
The 2nd European Senior Team Championship will be held under the auspices of ECU in Dresden from 1st to 8th March 2000.
An European Grand Prix should start in 2001. The regulations of the Nordic Grand Prix can be taken as the basis and will be discussed in Batumi.
The General Assembly of the European Chess Union is scheduled for 6th December 1999 in Batumi. The Board expressed its hope that most of the European Federations will be present because it will be a good possibility for discussions and decisions.
The agenda will be sent on time.
Looking forward to seeing you in Batumi.
Kind regards,
Horst Metzing
