Circular Letter No. 5 / 2000
Dear friends,
The Chess Federation of Herzeg Bosnia will organize the 1st European Rapid and Blitz Championship in Neum from 2nd until 5th October 2000. Further details are enclosed. We would like to ask you to inform your players and to recommend the participation in these European events.
The traditional European Youth Championships will be be held in Kallithea/Greece. Up to now, more than 100 additional players have been registered by the organizing committees. We would like to remind you that all entry fees as well as all payments have to be made on arrival. Otherwise your players will not have the opportunity to participate in this championship.
Enclosed you will find information about the 3rd European Senior Team Championship 2001. This championship will be held once more in Dresden/Germany.
The Italian Chess Federation has proposed to hold an annual Mitropa Cup Junior Championship. The inaugural event will be held under the auspices of ECU in Aymavilles/Italy from 18th until 26th November 2000. All Mitropa Cup federations have already been invited to this round-robin tournament.
In the last two months we had some very important European championships:
The 1st European Individual Championship was organized in St.-Vincent/Italy from 3rd until 14th July 2000. Congratulation to the first European Champion, GM Pavel Tregubov/RUS. Second was GM Aleksej Aleksandrov/BLR ahead of Tomasz Markowski/POL. All scored 8 points out of 11.
The 1st European Youth Team Championship in Balatonlelle /Hungary was a big success for the Ukrainian Chess Federation. Both teams (boys and girls) could win the gold medal ahead of Germany and Romania (in the boys group) respectively ahead of Hungary A and Moldavia (in the girls group).
First European Women's Rapid Champion became Maia Chiburdanidze/GEO. Natasa Bojkovic/YUG won the 1st European Women's Blitz Championship. Both events were held in Banja Luka/BIH from 15th until 19th August 2000.
The next meeting of the ECU Board in Aviles/Spain is scheduled from 25th until 27th August 2000. Decisions about the venues of European Championships have to be made.
The next circular letter will be probably posted at the beginning of September.
Kind regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
