Circular Letter No. 2 /2001

Dear Friends,
Last weekend the ECU Board met in Belgrade/ Yugoslavia for another important meeting. We would once more like to thank the Yugoslavian Chess Federation for the invitation.
In reference to our circular letter no. 1, we can inform you that the European Individual Championship will be held in Ohrid /Macedonia from the 1-15 of June 2001. The official invitation will be distributed by the organizing federation on time. The Board has decided upon the following technical details as the main guidelines of the this year’s championship.
- 13 rounds with system , one free day , one day for play-offs,
- Time control according to FIDE WCC regulation.
- Participants: three players per federation, open to further players with a minimum of 2400, maximum of 20 players per federation, no limit per federation for qualification to the world championships.
- Price fund US $ 240,000 (reduced by 20% for FIDE respective ECU)
According to the decision of the Board the future European Individual Championships (men and women) shall be organized in the period between the 25th May and the 20th June. This period should enable the federations and tournament organizers to avoid any clashes with the most important european championships.
Bids for the European Women’s Individual Championships 2002, the European Junior Championships 2002 and the European Youth Championships 2002, have to reach our secretariat according to the official bid procedure by the 1st August 2001. The decision in relation to the venues will be taken by the Board at the beginning of September 2001.
Bids for the European Club Cup have been received from Crete/ Greece, Pärnu/ Estonia, Andorra, Krynica/ Poland, Sopron/ Hungary, St. Vincent/ Italy. Representatives from Greece, Andorra and Hungary presented their bids at the Board meeting. After having discussed in length the pro and contra of all bids the Board had to state that all six bids were excellent and worthy of acceptance. Finally the Board decided between, two more or less equal, bids, in favour of Chania (Crete/ Greece). This event will be organized according to the tournament regulations from the 22nd till 30th of Sepember 2001.
The Yugoslavian Chess Federation will organize the Club Cup for women, probably in Belgrade. Further details will be announced before the 15th March 2001.
The European Rapid and Blitz Championships are to be held in Zopot/ Poland from 9th –13th May 2001. The invitations will be sent out by the Polish Chess Federation.
The European Grand Prix has started at the beginning of this year. There are still possibilities for tournament organizers to join these European Grand Prix (annex).
