Circular Letter No. 7/2001

Dear Friends,

As already mentioned in our last circular letter, the this year’s ECU General Assembly is to take place on Sunday November 11th 2001 in Léon/Spain. According to Art. 4.15 of our Statutes, proposals from member federations to be included in the agenda for the General Assembly should reach our secretariat not later than three months prior to the beginning of the General Assembly (i.e. before August 10th 2001).

ECU President Boris Kutin, President of the Georgian Chess Federation and ECU Board member Zurab Azmaiparashvili met the president of the Autonomous Republic of Ajara (Georgia), Mr. Aslan Abashidze in Batumi. They have agreed that the first continental match between Europe and Asia is to be held in Batumi from September 15th – 19th 2001. Each team consists of 10 boards (six men and four women). The men are to play two rounds, the women are to play three rounds rapid chess in accordance with the scheveningen system. Gary Kasparov/Russia has agreed to represent Europe in this match. The final nominations of the players will be announced within the next few days.

We would like to remind you that the first European Senior Championship is to be held in Saint Vincent/Italy from September 15th-23rd 2001. The organizer offers free accomodation to one player per federation. All senior players are requested to come to Saint Vincent! The official invitations have already been distributed to the European federations.

The Belarus Chess Federation has informed us that the European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Championships 2001 has to be postponed and will now take place between October 2nd-7th 2001. As soon as further details are known you will be informed respectively.

The email address of the Moldova Chess Federation has changed. The new one is fskrip@company.md

Looking forward some relaxing holidays!

Best regards,

Horst Metzing
