Dear Friends,
Circular letter No. 09/2001
The this year’s ECU General Assembly took place in León /Spain on 11 November 2001. The minutes have already been distributed to all federations.
We would like to thank the Spanish Chess Federation and Mr Marcelino Sión as tournament director for their efforts to hold the European Team Championship 2001 in Leon. They really did a great job . It was a well organised championship. Unfortunately it suffered a little bit from the absence of the Russian, Armenian and Hungarian (men) teams. Congratulations to the Dutch men’s team and the French women’s team for their gold medal. The final result was as follows:
Men Women
1. Netherlands 1. France
2. France 2. Moldova
3. Germany 3. England
Concerning the European Individual Championship one will have received the information from Groningen and the ECU press release. Due to the few registrations this championship has been cancelled by the Stichting Schaak Groningen. We are now in the process of negotiations with Andorra in order to organise the 2002 Championship. If the Chess Federation of Andorra is not in a position to hold this event the bid procedure will be re-opened.
The Chess Academy of Northern Greece has made a concrete offer for the European Club Cup 2002. The proposed dates are 22 – 29 September 2002. The venue will be Kallithea/ Halikiki. As soon as all details are known you will receive the official invitation.
As Groningen has cancelled the entire festival it is impossible to hold the final of the First ECU Grand Prix as scheduled. The final tournament will be the Open Aoste Vallée in St. Vincent /Italy from 9 – 17 February 2002.
In order to avoid any clash of European Events with National Team and Individual Championships we would like to request all federations to inform us of the dates of their respective championships.
As has already been announced, we will publish the new ECU Manual at the beginning of next year. We, therefore, kindly ask you to check your addresses (annex), which have been published in the previous Manual 2000 or on the ECU Website. Furthermore we need the names and addresses of your presidents and the official ECU delegates.
The ECU Board wishes you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Best regards,
Horst Metzing
Secretary General
