Dear Friends,

On 15 and 16 May 2005 the Turkish Chess Federation hosted a ECU Board Meeting in Cezme.

Concerning the qualification for the Individual World Championship, the Board has clarified the current state of affairs as follows:

1. For the next World Chess Championship 12 men and 12 women are qualified from the European Individual Championships 2004 (from Belek and Dresden, respectively).

2. In addition, for the next World Chess Championship, 34 men and 17 women will be qualified through the European Individual Championships 2005 (from Warschau and Kishinev, respectively).

Those players qualified from the European Individual Championships 2004 (men and women), the 2004 Tripoli World Chess Championship semi-finalists (only men: Adams, Topalov and Radjabov) the 2004 Elista World Chess Championship semifinalists (only women: Stefanova, Kovalevskaja and Chiburdanidze) only play tiebreak matches in the case of a tie for medals, not for World Chess Championship qualification.

3. In case one of the 2004 or 2005 European qualifiers, is qualified by FIDE-rating, the next player of the 2005 European Individual Championship final standings will be qualified.

4. In case Europe has a right for more qualifiers, the next of the 2005 European Individual Championships final standings will be qualified.

The 2006 European Senior Individual Championship has been granted to Davos/Switzerland. The proposed period is 29 July to 6 August. The time control for senior championship will not be changed.

The European Amateur Championship 2005 was postponed by the Serbia and Montenegro Chess Federation due to the low number of registrations.

In co-operation with ChessBase, the 3rd European Individual Internet Championship is planned at the end of this year. Furthermore a team event should be held. Details are not yet known.

The Serbia and Montenegro Chess Federation has distributed the invitations to the European Youth Championship under 10 to 18 which will be held in Herceg Novi from 13 to 24 September 2005. Immediately thereafter, the European Rapid and Blitz Championship under 18 will follow at the same venue.

The Austrian Chess Federation has announced that the EU Youth Championship 10 – 14 will be organized once more in Mureck from 17 to 26 August 2005.

From 8 to 13 August 2005 the Euro Chess Tournament will be played in Hengelo/Netherlands. Details of this former Open Dutch Youth Championship are available at www.onjk.nl. 600 to 700 players from all over Europe are expected to participate.

As already announced, the ECU General Assembly will take place during the European Team Championship in Gothenburg on 6 August 2005 at 10 a. m.. Some team captains or arbiters will be delegates. Therefore the meeting should be finished by 1.30 p.m. We would like to remind you to register your official delegate via the form which was enclosed in the previous Circular Letter.

Due to the serious illness of our treasurer Egon Ditt, the financial matters could not be settled as usual. We hope that all invoices will be sent to the federations within the next weeks.

Best regards,
